Dragons aren't bright enough to talk until well after what would generally be considered adulthood; they keep growing in intelligence, as well as in size, for as long as they live.

Aldagon is, in fact, only the fourth-oldest dragon in the World; it's just the three older ones have never been seen or mentioned.

Yes, I know, but snakes definitely do have a smell, even if it's faint. You can get it from their shed skins.

I wrote the relevant paragraph, and said (among other things) that it reminded Hanner of blood without actually being that similar.
