With a Single Spell, The Spell of the Black Dagger

Ellran's Dissipation is an incredibly powerful but very simple first-order spell discovered by accident in YS 4680 by the little-known research wizard Ellran the Unfortunate. This spell renders an area of varying size permanently dead to wizardry while having no known effect on any other type of magic. Since the Old Ethshar and the military both relied heavily on wizardry and the Northern Empire did not, the spell was deemed to be exceedingly dangerous and was vigorously suppressed.

This spell has only been performed three times; once in 4680, when Ellran discovered it, again in 4762 when Captain Seth Thorun's son used it to end a feud with Derithon the Mage, and finally in 5227 when Tobas of Telven used it to stop the Seething Death which had been unleashed by Telurinon to slay Tabaea the Thief in the palace of the overlord of Ethshar of the Sands.

The Wizards' Guild has decreed use of this spell punishable by death, and the usage by Tobas of Telven was by special dispensation due to extraordinary circumstances.
